Performers inside The Cargo Shed

The Cargo Shed is jointly owned and managed by Tauranga City Council and the Otamataha Trust, representing hapū Ngāti Tapu and Ngāti Ruahine who hold mana whenua over this area. Together, they guide the venue through the Taumata Kahawai Governance Group – a partnership that ensures The Cargo Shed reflects the values, history and aspirations of tangata whenua.

The name ‘Taumata Kahawai’ speaks to the harbour’s deep cultural significance: a place of gathering, sustenance and connection for generations. This legacy lives on in our venue today, welcoming all who wish to gather, connect and celebrate here.

For a time, the shed became a popular space for local artists and craftspeople to sell their wares, and in 2018 the building was carefully restored through a $1.35 million refurbishment. It reopened in 2023 as a flexible venue for events, hui, weddings, fono, meetings, workshops, celebrations and more. Inside, exposed timber beams, corrugated iron walls and polished concrete floors now create a rustic-industrial charm that blends heritage character with modern comfort.

From its roots in Tauranga’s early growth, The Cargo Shed continues to serve its community as a place for people to gather and connect – today and into the future.
